  “Hey, come on now,” Layla said.

  “It’s quite all right,” I said, smiling and nodding to Leo. “He’s not wrong to think us French are assholes.”

  Leo snorted, although something in his face registered amusement, like he liked my answer.

  “Well, hopefully you’re not hating this family too much,” Leo said. “I’m sure you’ve found it suffocating and difficult enough.”

  “It’s got its share of interesting moments,” I said.

  Leo looked at Layla and smirked.

  “He’s not a suck-up like the rest,” he said. “Well, you two have fun. I’m sure he’s great at making love.”

  “Leo!”

  But Leo was already walking away, laughing to himself, leaving Layla to shake her head. She looked sorely disappointed in the actions of her brother, but I truthfully couldn’t understand why. It was actually quite easy to understand Leo; I just got the sense not many people tried to.

  “Sorry about the attitude,” she said. “Everyone thinks he’s an asshole, but he’s just misunderstood.”

  I didn’t say anything. I just smiled as I watched him make the quickest of hellos before grabbing food and walking around the house.

  “What’s so funny?” she said.

  Well, I hadn’t found it “funny” per se, but now that she had said it as such, I really couldn’t help but laugh.

  “I like a good rebel,” I said.

  I only needed to think back to how I had said no to college, how I had chosen my own path, how I had ignored the roadmap laid out for me by my parents. I quickly thought about how I had defied Antoine and his wishes for me to “live it up” during Fashion Week. I even thought of how Gio had expected me to just bend over.

  I recognized his expression because I had worn it so often.

  “I guess you could say I see a bit of my old self in him.”
